– The United States called on Monday for a United Nations Security Council presidential statement to hold North Korea accountable for its missile tests after Pyongyang’s launch last week of an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of reaching the U.S. mainland. The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield said it was vital the 15-member Security Council respond with one voice and reiterated U.S. charges that China and Russia were “emboldening” Pyongyang by blocking council action. “The United States should be mindful that no matter how desperately it may seek to disarm the DPRK, it can never deprive the DPRK of its right to self-defence,” Kim said. A spokesperson for the U.S. mission to the United Nations said a draft president’s statement would be provided to the Security Council soon and negotiations would follow. North Korea has launched an unprecedented number of ballistic missiles this year and Washington has warned for months that Pyongyang could test its first nuclear device since 2017 at any time.9 days ago Euronews
Xi too was explicit about Taiwan, calling it the “first red line” that must not be crossed in China-U.S. relations. The White House said Biden and Xi agreed to “deepen constructive efforts” to address issues such as climate change, health and food security. But according to the White House statement, Biden and Xi “underscored their opposition to the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine”. Biden told reporters after the meeting there was no need for concerns about a new Cold War between the United States and China. At the same time, Biden warned Xi that such actions by North Korea would result in bolstered U.S. and allied military capabilities in Northeast Asia.17 days ago Euronews

By Bernard Orr and Martin Quin PollardBEIJING -China reported record high COVID-19 infections on Thursday, with cities nationwide imposing localised lockdowns, mass testing and other curbs that are fuelling frustration and darkening the outlook for the world’s second largest economy. Nomura estimates that more than a fifth of China’s GDP is under lockdown, a share bigger than the British economy. China recently began loosening some norms on mass tests and quarantine, as it looks to avoid catch-all measures such as city-wide lockdowns. Many cities have returned to mass testing, which China had hoped to cut back as costs rise. Others, including Beijing, Shanghai and the Hainan island resort city of Sanya, have limited movements of recent arrivals.7 days ago Euronews
That was the last time Aby, a Seoul resident from the Ivory Coast, saw him. “I called his number but … he wasn’t answering,” Aby told Reuters while standing in the Hannam-dong Community Service Center, which became a makeshift missing persons facility in the wake of the disaster. “No one is telling me the truth,” said Aby, who has lived in Seoul with her son for 18 years. With no sign of news about the son, Aby left the centre for the Ivory Coast embassy. “The families need to get this certificate from the police, then we can release the bodies to the families,” the official said.1 month ago Euronews
North Korea is covertly shipping a "significant number" of artillery shells to Russia in support of Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, US authorities claim. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said on Wednesday the US believes North Korea is "trying to make it appear as though they're being sent to countries in the Middle East or North Africa." Kirby said North Korea "is covertly supplying" the ammunition to Russia but that "we're still monitoring this to determine whether the shipments are actually received." Kirby insisted the North Korean shipments are "not going to change the course of the war," citing Western efforts to resupply the Ukrainian military. In July, North Korea became the only nation aside from Russia and Syria to recognise the so-called independence of the territories -- Donetsk and Luhansk -- further aligning with Russia over the conflict in Ukraine.1 month ago Euronews
