There are records of native Americans consuming dog meat and including puppy meat as part of some rituals. Tahiti, Hawaii, and many other Polynesian island nations have all had histories of dog meat consumption. In Africa, several tribes have been documented as eaters of dog meat, and there are also reports of the inclusion of dog meat in rituals. Asia is where there has been a considerable history of dog meat consumption. Contrary to popular perception, dog meat has not always been, and is not, a common item in the Chinese diet.
