DevotionIn 1950, American naval pilots were still regarded as some of the best in the world. But Devotion, new on Netflix, is not a documentary, or even just a biopic of Brown. This is a solid and unflashy movie about a little-understood war and some genuine American heroes who were a part of it. In a genre that so often gets it wrong, Devotion is a pretty good wee film. Liberated: The New Sexual Revolution is a horror film, in the guise of a socially conscious documentary.

Chef and food entrepreneur Cherie Metcalfe has released a new cookbook called Together: Food for Sharing. When chef and food entrepreneur Cherie Metcalfe realised Kiwis were importing a seasoning that was trending on TikTok, she set out and made her own version. Since then, says the Tauranga-based founder of seasoning and condiments brand Pepper & Me, her ‘TikTok Trending’ seasoning has become increasingly popular. Metcalfe’s book, Together, was given that name because she loves the idea of people sharing food – the recipes are designed to be grouped together and served as a feast. Squid Game’s Lee Jung-jae directs and stars in this 1980s-set thriller about a foreign intelligence chief who uncovers a plot to assassinate the South Korean president, while also hunting for a North Korean mole within his own agency. That they are equally matched is key, especially as the focus and perspective subtly – and not so subtly – shifts as the story progresses. Kiwis will be familiar with Scott Base, New Zealand’s home in Antarctica, but what about its neighbours? Reporter Lee Kenny looks at South Korea’s futuristic Jang Bogo station. He was among those who “wintered-over” in 2022, seeing out the long, cold months at Jang Bogo, South Korea’s station in Terra Nova Bay, where temperatures can reach minus 24C. Jang Bogo is around 350km from Scott Base, relatively close in Antarctic terms.
