UK to assess domestic tank numbers amid Ukraine Challenger 2 provision

The UK will assess the number of Challenger 2 tanks being upgraded to the Challenger 3 variant in light of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. A new tick-borne disease is killing cattle in the US

In Australia, where the disease has been spreading since 2012 and now affects a quarter of the cattle, theileria costs the beef industry an estimated $19.6 million a year in reduced milk and meat yields, according to a 2021 paper. In statements to MIT Technology Review, the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, one of the largest cattle lobbying groups, said that occurrences of the disease remain rare in the United States. That contradicts the experience of McCall, the Granos’ veterinarian, who in 2020 encountered theileria in 40 of the Virginia farms she serves. Denise Bonilla, the cattle fever tick program coordinator at the USDA, says the agency doesn’t have the funds to set up a framework around this specific issue. Meanwhile the Asian longhorned tick continues to proliferate.

South Korea, Saudi to boost ties on energy, defence; US$30 billion in deals signed

SEOUL :South Korean and Saudi Arabian leaders pledged stronger ties on Thursday in the fields of energy, defence industry and building projects, as the oil-rich kingdom signed investment agreements worth US$30 billion with South Korean companies. "In particular, he said he would like to drastically strengthen cooperation with South Korea in the areas of defence industry, infrastructure and construction," Yoon's office said. Saudi-based Asharq TV quoted the kingdom's investment minister as saying deals signed on Thursday were worth US$30 billion. "The (South Korean) government will actively support the successful implementation of cooperative projects which apply Korea's state-of-the-art architecture ... in NEOM," said South Korea's trade minister, Lee Chang-yang. Shares in Lotte Fine Chemical, which signed an agreement for chemical industry cooperation with the Saudi Ministry of Investment, rose 2.1per cent.

South Korea truckers go on strike again, supply chain at risk

UIWANG, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea :Unionised truckers in South Korea kicked off their second major strike in less than six months on Thursday, threatening to disrupt manufacturing and fuel supplies for industries from autos to petrochemicals in the world's 10th-largest economy. In June, an eight-day strike by truckers delayed cargo shipments across Asia's fourth-largest economy, costing more than US$1.2 billion in lost output and unmet deliveries. Lead organiser the Cargo Truckers Solidarity Union (CTSU) has warned the strike could stop oil supplies at major refineries and transport at major ports and industrial plants. "We have no choice but to stop all logistics in Korea," said Lee Bong-ju, head of the union, on Thursday. The Korea Oil Station Association is asking gas station owners to secure enough inventory ahead of the strike, an association official said earlier.
