Roy Keane has revealed his frustration over the “constant pressure” from Alex Ferguson not to play for Ireland during his time at Manchester United. Speaking at a World Cup preview event with SkyBet, Keane said: “I was under constant pressure when I was going away with Ireland from the Manchester United manager. “I used to see other lads going away and it used to frustrate me a little bit. (they) definitely had an issue when I was going away to play with Ireland. It used to drive me mad, and it put you under huge pressure….not going away to play for your country.

North Korea: Missile tests were practice to attack South and US says military leadership

Some experts say many other North Korean missiles launched last week were short-range nuclear-capable weapons that place key military targets in South Korea, including US military bases there, within striking range. Spokesperson Kim Jun-rak said South Korea didn’t detect the North’s cruise missile launches and that it’s also notable that North Korea didn’t mention what Seoul assessed as an abnormal flight by an ICBM. On Saturday, the final day of the air force exercises, the United States flew two B-1B supersonic bombers over South Korea in a display of strength against North Korea, the aircraft’s first such flyover since December 2017. US and South Korean militaries have been expanding their regular military drills since the May inauguration of conservative South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, who has promised to take a tougher stance on North Korean provocations. For months, South Korean and US officials have said North Korea has completed preparations to conduct its first nuclear test in five years.

Revealed: the junior minister who flew business class to Abu Dhabi while Darragh O’Brien travelled in economy

A junior minister flew business class, while the senior minister in his department was in economy on the same flight earlier this year, an analysis of travel records reveals. His senior colleague – Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien – flew with him, but had to make do with economy class. In total, seven Government representatives – including the Taoiseach, Tánaiste, two senior Green Ministers and the Attorney General – flew business class on their St Patrick’s Day trips. Business class seats are responsible for emitting three times more carbon than economy. The Government’s lawyer, Attorney General Paul Gallagher flew business class to Washington, with flights costing €3,254.

Fifa has degraded the World Cup, and the least it can do is make reparations for abusing workers

The “E” of course would be for Ecuador, who take on World Cup hosts Qatar in the first game of the 2022 World Cup. So, despite serious misgivings about this 2022 World Cup, I will watch chunks of it at various stages after it starts next Sunday. But when you consider that Qatar got this World Cup ahead of bidders including South Korea and USA, you have to wonder. On the issue of gay and LGBTQ+ rights, we saw a Fifa press officer move to shut down a German TV interview with a Qatari World cup ambassador. Given the various controversies which have surrounded international soccer for several decades, it is hard to also ignore the allegations of corruption surrounding the allocation of the World Cup to Qatar.

Of the 22 Fifa committee members who awarded the World Cup to the Gulf sheikhdom of Qatar in 2010, 17 have since been suspended, resigned or been prosecuted. Allocating the World Cup, or the Olympic Games, to countries with money to waste is not a recent departure. In Durban a World Cup stadium was built within walking distance of an existing venue long deemed adequate to host the Springboks rugby team, one of the world’s best. The USA spent less than the price of one stadium in Brazil on the entire 1994 World Cup. If Fifa wanted to bring the World Cup to a new host country, Australia was available.
