Oscar wins in 2020 and 2022 with Parasite and Drive My Car give confidence to a buoyant region that has upped the number of countries participating in this year’s international feature Oscar. This year four Oscar entries from the Asia Pacific region premiered there: three in Un Certain Regard and one in Competition. North American profileTwo contenders from South Asia have found US distribution, which is considered crucial for a successful Oscar campaign. The Asia Pacific contenders also include festival favourites. Rounding out submissions for the Asia Pacific region are Shamil Aliyev’s documentary Creators from Azerbaijan, and Dung Luong Dinh’s action thriller 578 Magnum from Vietnam, which will receive an international premiere this month at Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival.

AFM 2022 touts record country attendance but deals are slow to materialise

AFM leadership said on Thursday that the recent in-person edition of the market drew attendees from a record 87 countries while the overall attendee level reached a solid 5,866. The AFM highlighted Italy and Malaysia as two countries with significant increases in participation with 29 exhibitors and 10, respectively. Screen understands the AFM leadership intends to stay in Santa Monica for the foreseeable future. There were 352 AFM screenings across 15 commercial theatre screens over four days and the AFM On Demand platform. “AFM 2022 was an important milestone in our 43-year history,” said Jean Prewitt, president/CEO of Independent Film & Television Alliance, which stages the AFM.

‘One Win’: Rotterdam Review

South Korea. A promisingly offbeat start soon segues into predictability and cliche in One Win, a sports-themed comedy/drama from South Korea about an underdog women’s volleyball team and their loser coach. Their glory days long behind them (their motto is “Again 1997”), Pink Storm sees an unexpected improvement in their prospects when the team is purchased by eccentric young millionaire Kang (Park Jung-min). Inspired by John G Avildsen’s original Rocky from 1976, the daffy-seeming but perhaps savvy Kang sees Pink Storm as the kind of hapless underdogs who can connect with the public’s affections. It’s also odd that no attempt is made to connect Pink Storm with any town or city, real or fictional: no location is mentioned, this is just Anywheresville, South Korea.
