China COVID curbs hit iPhone output, shut Shanghai Disney

China‘s COVID-19 curbs forced the closure of Disney’s Shanghai resort on Monday, while production of Apple Inc iPhones at a vast contract manufacturing facility could drop by 30% next month due to coronavirus restrictions, a source told Reuters. Data released on Monday showed that Chinese factory activity unexpectedly fell in October, dragged down by softening global demand and strict domestic COVID-19 curbs, which hit production, travel and shipping in the world’s second-largest economy. “With the zero-COVID policy here to stay, we think the economy will continue to struggle heading into 2023,” Zichun Huang, economist at Capital Economics, said in a research note. New cases in mainland China hit 2,898 on Sunday, topping 2,000 for a second straight day, a tiny number by global standards. However, in Beijing the Universal Resort theme park reopened on Monday after being shut last week because one visitor had tested positive for coronavirus.

Global factory output weakens on widespread slowdown, China COVID curbs

Global factory output weakened in October as widespread recession fears, high inflation and China’s zero-COVID policy hurt demand, business surveys showed on Tuesday, adding to persistent supply disruptions and darkening recovery prospects. The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) said on Tuesday that its manufacturing PMI fell to 50.2 in October from 50.9 in September. China’s Caixin/S&P Global manufacturing PMI stood at 49.2 in October, up from 48.1 in September. Japan’s au Jibun Bank Japan Manufacturing PMI fell to 50.7 in October from September’s 50.8 final, marking the weakest growth since January last year. India was an outlier with factory activity expanding at a stronger pace in October as demand remained solid.

North Korea fires more than 10 missiles after threat, says Seoul

South Korea says North Korea has fired a total of more than 10 missiles off its eastern and western coasts. Earlier South Korea’s military said it detected the three North Korean short-range ballistic missiles fired off the peninsula’s eastern coast. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement North Korea fired the missiles from its eastern coastal area of Wonsan on Wednesday morning. It said South Korea has boosted its surveillance posture on North Korea. Some experts still doubt North Korea could use nuclear weapons first in the face of US and South Korean forces.

15.24 lakh foreigners visited India in 2021; highest from US, followed by Bangladesh

Over 15 lakh foreigners, including 4.29 lakh US nationals and 2.4 lakh Bangladeshis, had visited India last year when the country was on an extended period of coronavirus restrictions and visa regulations, officials said. A total of 15,24,469 foreigners visited India between January 1 and December 31, 2021. The maximum number of foreigners who visited India during this period were from the United States (4,29,860), followed by those from Bangladesh (2,40,554), United Kingdom (1,64,143), Canada (80,437) and Nepal (52,544). Scheduled international flights from India to international destinations remained suspended for two years from March 25, 2020, till March 27, 2022. During this period, international flights were operated only under the ‘air-bubble’ arrangements, the official said.
