Over the years, I’ve identified dozens of soups that will fuel body and spirit during the bone-chilling stretch from December through March. The noodles, made specifically for Hanabi Ramen, are traditional to tonkotsu ramen, says Kenji Hisatsune, chef and owner of Hanabi. Hisatsune puts just as much thought into the rest of his tonkotsu ramen, a soup that, he figures, requires 20 hours to produce. Its blaze is not lethal; it’s more of a steady flame, like a warm hearth in the dead of winter. As you slurp the housemade noodles, each strand shimmering with broth, you experience something greater than a bowl of chicken ramen.

The Washington Post Exclusive Crucial missteps led to tragically delayed rescue in a Seoul alley Videos posted online show the streets of Itaewon in Seoul throughout the night of Oct. 29 when a fatal crowd crush occurred during Halloween festivities. Most of the raucous celebrations take place along World Food Street — a block of restaurants and bars — and the side alleys that connect it to one of Itaewon’s main thoroughfares. From World Food Street on the northern end, people continued turning in, unaware of what was happening. Meanwhile, a photo from a bird’s-eye perspective shows that foot traffic continued in from World Food Street, exacerbating the bottleneck. He radioed for backup, then he and another officer ran to World Food Street to try to keep more people from entering the alley.
