CRITICAL MASS: Movies in Ordinary Time — a best of and an alternate list of 2022’s Top 10 films

Big movies that require big rooms, big screens and the massed anxieties of strangers sitting together in the dark. But that's not all they can be, and spectacle movies aren't the only movies we can love. But maybe it's useful for us to simply think of Ordinary Time as the everyday time, when business as usual is conducted. Looking over my list of the best movies of 2022, it's pretty clear I tend to like movies set in Ordinary Time, movies about plausible people making plausible decisions and suffering and coping in ways most of us can understand. That said, it may well be a movie that's more fun to talk about than to watch.

China arrivals must get covid test, U.S. says

Dr. Stuart Campbell Ray, an infectious disease expert at Johns Hopkins University, agreed China isn't sharing enough genomic sequencing information. Japan will require a negative covid-19 test upon arrival for travelers from China, and Malaysia announced new tracking and surveillance measures. On a popular social media site, the French Embassy in China wrote: "Chinese friends, France welcomes you with open arms!" Many would-be travelers to China expressed worries about getting covid in a country where medical services are already overstretched. The lifting of quarantine rules does not end all obstacles to travel to China.

U.S., Japan leaders talk security

WASHINGTON -- President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida held wide-ranging talks at the White House on Friday as Japan looks to build security cooperation with allies in a time of provocative Chinese and North Korean military action. Inside the Oval Office, the U.S. president praised Japan for its "historic" increase in defense spending and pledged close cooperation on economic and security matters. Japan is also reinforcing defenses on its southwestern islands close to Taiwan, including Yonaguni and Ishigaki, where new bases are being constructed. Biden administration officials have praised Japan for stepping up in the aftermath of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Kishida said Japan urgently needs to build more warships, strengthen anti-missile capability and improve working conditions for troops. Kishida said Japan will further strengthen the deterrence and response capability of the Japan-U.S. alliance. "If a person's never seen that wall, this wall will bring back a lot of memories. It's a beautiful wall," Campbell said, looking out on the field where the traveling wall had been put up. "God was with me all through Vietnam," Steer said. In 2020, for example, the suicide rate among veterans was 31.7 per 100,000 people, compared with 16.1 per 100,000 among nonveterans, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report released in September. On average, 16 veterans died by suicide a day in 2020, the VA's report showed, after peaking in 2018 at around 18 per day.

N. Korea continues simulated attacksSEOUL, South Korea -- North Korea fired a short-range ballistic missile toward its eastern sea on Wednesday, extending a recent barrage of weapons demonstrations including what it described as simulated attacks on South Korean and U.S. targets last week. The South Korean and Japanese militaries assessed that the missile flew about 155 to 180 miles at a maximum altitude of 18 to 30 miles. The relatively low trajectory seemed to align with the flight characteristics of some of North Korea's newer short-range weapons designed to evade missile defenses. He said North Korea's intensifying testing activity was "significantly heightening" regional tensions, and Japan lodged a protest with the North through their embassies in Beijing. South Korean officials say the North could attempt to further raise pressure by conducting its first nuclear test since 2017 in coming weeks.
