Dr Hajah Anie Haryani said the meeting was the first in-person FETN meeting since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. “Integral to many of our COVID-19 responses was the use of digital technology. The unique challenges generated by the pandemic created new needs and abruptly changed the motivation to make use of digital health. The meeting discussed lessons learnt from COVID-19 and how the region can carry the lessons forward in evaluating and implementing regional health cooperation for strengthening FET.

Sultanate scores high in voctech skills

Azlan OthmanBrunei Darussalam took 18th spot globally for vocational and technical (voctech) skills and triumphed in mid-level skills at 12th place in this year’s Global Talent Competitiveness Index 2022 (GTCI 2022) published last week. Brunei was 50th in Enabling Talent and Global Knowledge, 51st in Attracting Talent and 53rd in Growing Talent. Switzerland, Singapore and Denmark are the most talent-competitive countries, according to the GTCI 2022. It provides a unique resource for decision makers to understand the global talent competitiveness picture and develop strategies to boost their economies. Despite continuing imbalances, the global talent competitiveness scene remains dynamic, and carries encouraging signs.

Frustrated foodies gobble up South Korean grocery unicorn

SEOUL (AFP) – When Sophie Kim moved home to South Korea after 15 years in the United States, she couldn’t find anywhere to buy kale for her green juice. The next-day grocery delivery service Market Kurly that 38-year-old Kim founded is now one of South Korea’s most important startup unicorns, last valued at USD3 billion and set for an initial public offering by February. Farming is tough in South Korea, Hwang said, owing to thin profit margins and a reliance on hard-to-find overseas workers amid dwindling interest in the industry from young South Koreans. It is important for South Korea’s unicorns like Market Kurly to take into account the social costs of their business models, said Minister for Small and Medium Enterprises and Start-ups Lee Young. “Market Kurly is a very good example because it has created a very innovative idea and they have gone through multiple struggles until they achieved current success.”

Korean wave hits Broadway

The global sensation that is Korean pop music is coming to centre stage in KPOP, opened yesterday at the Circle in the Square Theatre. Born in South Korea, Kim came to the United States (US) as a child, settling with his family in the Midwest. K-pop has been a fixture in his life, as have Korean television dramas. It’s a step forward for Asian American representation on Broadway, which matters a great deal to Kim. “Hopefully if we do our jobs right, you’re watching a fun musical with a bunch of great K-pop songs,” he said.

K-pop veteran Byul returns after 14 years with new album

Choi Ji-wonANN/THE KOREA HERALD – After a 14-year break of devoting herself to her family, Byul (KOREA HERALD pic, below) has returned with her sixth full-length album. Byul last Wednesday unveiled her sixth full-length album, Startrail, the first album under her name since she tied the knot with comedian and singer Haha in 2012 and since her fifth LP Like A Star – Primary dropped in 2009. Standing before local press for a joint interview a week ahead of the album release, Byul expressed that she had been desperate to realise this comeback. According to Byul, the album itself is like her favourite playlist of songs she has cherry-picked. But it’s a completely different song when you hear it.”Byul hoped her album could make up for her decade-long hiatus.

Will South Korea host Tesla ‘gigafactory’?

Tesla is the world’s largest EV maker by all-electric car registrations and the runner-up in plug-in type car sales in the first three quarters of 2022. Korea, meanwhile, is home to LG Energy Solution, the world’s second-largest EV battery maker and one of the suppliers for Tesla. “Japan has a huge automotive market that sells about five million cars every year. Tesla sold 13,032 EVs from January to September, down 20 per cent from the previous year, according to data jointly provided by market tracker CarIsYou and the Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association. The decline of Tesla’s sales was steeper than the average of foreign brands, at 7.4 per cent.

Thankfully for the kid, two detectives are staking out this particular baby box. One, Soo-jin (Bae Doona), gets out to put the baby in the box.
