We made our list of the 50 best destinations for 2023 a little differently this year: We asked Travel + Leisure's editors where they want to go in the months ahead. That’s why, for the first time in recent memory, we’ve broken our list of best places to go into categories. The hope is that, whatever it is you’re after in the year ahead, you’ll find it in one of these 50 places. Ponant has a dozen distinct itineraries scheduled for 2023, including a number of round trips from Kangerlussuaq, in Western Greenland, that explore Baffin Bay.

Flight bookings from mainland China skyrocketed as border reopens

Outbound flight bookings from mainland China are surging, according to data from Trip.com Group, with a spike in demand expected for the upcoming Lunar New Year break at the end of January. Singapore, South Korea, Hong Kong, Japan and Thailand are leading the most popular destinations for Chinese travelers. On the morning of December 27th, the company recorded a staggering 254% increase in mainland China’s outbound flight bookings compared to a day earlier. By 2019, China was the world’s largest outbound travel market by departure numbers and spending. Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Chengdu and Hangzhou claimed the top five places as the most popular cities of departure in light of online searches for outbound flights.

These are the best universities for 2023

The US’s share of the world’s top 100 universities is declining while that of East Asian nations and universities in the Middle East is on the rise, according to the 19th annual edition of The Times Higher Education ranking published earlier this month. “There’s no evidence that US research is weakening in an absolute sense,” Simon Marginson, professor of higher education at the University of Oxford told Times Higher Education. While China’s universities excel in the rankings, their scores for international research collaboration and their share of international talent are in decline. “It would be regrettable if the growth of foreigners working in higher education in China stops as the engagement is good for everyone,” Marginson said. It is based on 13 separate performance metrics, covering the full range of internationally-focussed research universities’ core missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.
