President Biden to meet China's Xi on Monday for Taiwan, Russia talks

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden will meet Monday with President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of next week’s Group of 20 Summit in Bali, Indonesia, a face-to-face meeting that comes amid increasingly strained U.S.-China relations, the White House announced Thursday. Biden on Wednesday told reporters that he intended to discuss with Xi growing tensions between Washington and Beijing over the self-ruled island of Taiwan, trade policies, Beijing’s relationship with Russia and more. “I don’t think there’s a lot of respect that China has for Russia or Putin,” Biden said Wednesday. Xi’s government has criticized the Biden administration’s posture toward Taiwan — which Beijing looks eventually to unify with the communist mainland — as undermining China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Tensions over Taiwan have grown since House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan in August.

While teenage exchange students spend a semester or a year in the United States to learn English and immerse themselves in American culture, the Long Island students benefit as well, host families and high school officials say. Meet five exchange students from Italy, Spain, Hungary, Japan and South Korea who are living on Long Island, and the families who have opened their homes to them. It was Lauren’s idea to become first-time hosts of an exchange student from August until January. When she was growing up in Lindenhurst, a friend’s family hosted an exchange student, and Lauren thought it was intriguing. Meet five exchange students from Italy, Spain, Hungary, Japan and South Korea who are living on Long Island, and the families who have opened their homes to them.

South Korea police admit responsibility for Halloween tragedy

During a Cabinet council meeting Tuesday, President Yoon Suk Yeol also acknowledged that South Korea lacks research on a crowd management. Saturday’s crowd surge has subsequently raised public questions about what South Korea has done to prevent human-made disasters. After the Itaewon disaster, police launched a 475-member task force to find its cause. President Yoon asked officials to provide the same government support to the bereaved families of the foreign victims as to South Korean dead and injured people. South Korean police said Monday they don’t have any specific procedures for handling incidents such as crowd surges during an event that has no organizers.

Lunar New Year tourism hopes fizzle as Chinese stay home

BANGKOK — A hoped-for boom in Chinese tourism in Asia over next week’s Lunar New Year holidays looks set to be more of a blip as most travelers opt to stay inside China if they go anywhere. Still, bookings for overseas travel have skyrocketed, suggesting it’s only a matter of time until the industry recovers. Gambling floors at two major casinos were largely full, with groups of Chinese visitors sitting around the craps tables. “I don’t dare to travel overseas yet,” she said and she and a friend took photos near the ruins, originally the 17th century Church of Mater Dei. According to Trip.com, a major travel services company, overseas travel bookings for the Jan. 21-27 Lunar New Year holidays were up more than five-fold.
